Hospice staff were amazing

Dr Kershaw’s supported Patricia’s husband, George to spend his last few days with his family at peace, stress-free, able to make precious memories.

Patricia Procter’s husband, George, sadly passed away at the age of 75 in May 2022, and the family are grateful for the support Dr Kershaw’s Team gave them…

“George and I had been married for 51 years. We have two children, Mark and Rachel, and two granddaughters, Orla and Fearne. George was quiet, with a thoughtful and loving nature, and a strong sense of humour. George had a passion for history and taught the subject for 30 years. We enjoyed many activities together, including the theatre and travelling. We were lucky enough to visit many countries.

In 2021, during lockdown, George had a scan which identified a tumour in his oesophagus. The following month we were told it was Stage 4 cancer. In 2022, George contracted an infection, he spent five difficult weeks in hospital before going to Dr Kershaw’s. After George arrived at the Hospice, it was like he came back to us, he was more communicative and at peace.

The Hospice staff were amazing. They made us feel relaxed, nothing was too much trouble, and they were always on hand to assist.

George spent two weeks at Dr Kershaw’s which enabled us to spend precious, stress-free time together. On nice days the staff would wheel George’s bed outside, making sure he was comfortable.

The Hospice staff were amazing. They made us feel relaxed, nothing was too much trouble, and they were always on hand to assist. They lifted George’s spirits and he was always pleased to see the nurses.

The day before George passed, he came home. We were grateful for the efficiency of the Hospice Team who ensured we had everything we needed to make George comfortable.

On the day George died, the Hospice at Home Team responded to my call straight away. They were professional, thoughtful, and gently guided me through George’s final minutes and afterwards too.

I would like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful staff. As a way of thanking Dr Kershaw’s, our daughter Rachel has become a Volunteer Receptionist at the Hospice.”
