About us

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice provides free, specialist, end-of-life and palliative care (an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients) for adults with life-limiting illnesses in Oldham and its surrounding areas in a peaceful and homely environment.

The Hospice opened in 1989 following the conversion and development of a 1930s cottage hospital originally built with a legacy from Dr John Kershaw, a local GP.

The Hospice has a team of dedicated clinical staff including doctors, nurses, health care assistants and care givers who support patients in the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit and Wellbeing Centre (day patient facility), along with supporting patients in the community through our Hospice at Home service and Caring Hands, the Hospice’s domiciliary service.

Hospice redevelopments

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice has undergone a number of building programmes, including the development of a state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit (IPU), which provides modern en-suite patient facilities overlooking our Hospice gardens. Work is also currently underway on an exciting project to rejuvenate our gardens, transforming our outdoor spaces into an accessible, welcoming haven for patients and their loved ones.

Our new gardens will feature dementia-friendly designs, looped walkways, and tranquil seating areas to provide peace and comfort. A special plot will also be available for patients to grow their own vegetables, which will empower them with a sense of accomplishment and connection to nature. Additionally, we are creating spaces that ensure more privacy for patients while also introducing a children’s play area to offer a warm, family-centered environment.

Fundraising for our Hospice

As an independent Hospice and a registered charity (Charity No. 1105924), Dr Kershaw’s Hospice receives less than one third of its funding from the Integrated Care System (ICS) with the remaining £5.3million annual budget coming from fundraising activities and donations.

To ensure the continuity of our services, and to provide care for future patients, the Hospice needs the community’s support today through fundraising activities, donations, legacies, income from the Hospice shops and revenue from the Hospice Lottery.

Greater Manchester Hospices member

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is a partner in the Greater Manchester (GM) Hospices Collaborative.

The GM Hospices Provider Collaborative is an all-ages partnership comprising Greater Manchester’s seven adult hospices (Bolton, Bury, Dr Kershaw’s, Springhill, St Ann’s, Wigan & Leigh, and Willow Wood) and two children’s hospices (Derian House and Francis House).

Modern hospices offer such a wide range of specialist services in support of the NHS, and we need to ensure our voice is heard so that our patients and their families can continue to receive high quality, individualised and holistic care right when they need it most.

By joining forces in this partnership, the individual hospices from across the region can come together with a collective voice to help influence the future provision of specialist palliative and end of life care for local people. The hospices across Greater Manchester are committed to working together to promote inclusion, assimilation and commissioning of specialist palliative and end of life care provided in the area.
